New Reyes D.R.G. Uses Dominican-Grown Wrapper

Omni, Reduced Carcinogen Cigarette from Vector Tobacco

In keeping with its self-declared effort to develop smoking products with "science-based reductions in certain harmful elements," Vector Tobacco Ltd. has introduced Omni, a reduced-carcinogen line of cigarettes. According to consumer tests conducted by the manufacturer, Omni tastes, smokes, and burns like any other cigarette.

Four major classes of carcinogens are reduced by 15 to 60 percent, according to the manufacturer, achieved largely through the use of proprietary tobacco strains as well as the addition of certain ingredients. While Omni has not been proven to reduce health risks, it does significantly reduce carcinogen levels in both first- and second-hand smoke, according to Vector.

Omni cigarettes are available in five packings: Full Flavor Kings, Lights Kings, Full Flavor 100's, Lights 100's, and Ultra Lights 100's. Tar yields range from 6mg to 15mg, and nicotine yields range from .5mg to 1mg. Menthol products will follow in 2002.

Cohiba Adds Mini-Sized Pequenos

General Cigar has debuted a new miniature-sized Cohiba, called Peque-os, which are entirely handmade in the Dominican Republic.

"Small cigars are hot," notes Cooper Gardiner, director of marketing for General Cigar, "and not just the mass market, but the premium segment too." So when general researched adding a cigarillo-sized Cohiba, it chose to go all out. "Peque-os, instead of being machine made, taste like a big cigar," notes Gardiner.

The cigars are rolled from the same tobacco blends as the company's flagship Cohiba line, square pressed, and packed in six-count tins. Suggested retail price is $13 per tin, which easily allows smokers who might shy away from full-sized Cohibas.

Tropical Tobacco Presents Box-Pressed Cacique Cigars in Regular and Gift Boxes

Tropical Tobacco's new line of Cacique Martin Family Series premium cigars is now available in regular boxes of 24, and in gift or sampler packages. Pronounced "kah-SEE-kay," the Spanish word translates to "Indian chief." The handmade, long-filler cigars are box-pressed, and made in the Dominican Republic.

In addition to the boxed cigars, Tropical Tobacco also offers two Gift Boxes. The first, the "Magnificent Seven," presents a variety of seven of the cigars in an attractive box, at $32 suggested retail. The Robusto and Churchill are also available in elegant glass tubes, coming 10 to the box, at $60 and $70, respectively.

"The Cacique Martin Family Series is reasonably priced, with no cigar retailing at over $6," says Ms. Martin. All cigars are keystone priced, and currently shipping from Tropical Tobacco.

Sr. Martin created a filler of piloto Cubano Dominican and Nicaraguan leaf, and wrapped it in piloto Cubano Dominican binder that yields a cigar with a smooth character from start to finish, a real challenge in blending cigar tobacco. The wrapper is a Cameroon selection, lauded as one of the highest quality wrapper tobaccos.

According to Ms. Martin, many cigars lack the full flavor that satisfies, regardless of their strength, but that Sr. Martin has succeeded in blending in that richness.

"Each of the six new Cacique Martin Family Series cigars bears the name of one of our family members," explains Ms. Martin, "from the 5 x 52 Robusto (the Silvia) to the 6 x 58 Gordo (the Don Pedro). All are fashioned in the classic Cuban shapes."
