In Celebration of Briar 2007 Calendar

Most pipe smokers are well-versed with the blending talents of tobacco connoisseur Gregory Pease, but are probably far less familiar with one of his other flairs: commercial photography. Previously available only to private collectors, Pease’s work — focused these days on artistic and personal pursuits — has appeared in galleries and publications but is now available through Imagekind, an Internet-based print-on-demand service.

Pease has also drawn 13 of his gallery-grade black and white photos from his ongoing portfolio of briar portraits and assembled them into a 12-month calendar for 2007. Pease’s portfolio is an exploration of the beauty and artistry of the briar tobacco pipe, both classic and modern. Not simply documentary images, these are expressions of the personality, the spirit of each piece; they are portraits of the pipes.

Two versions of the calendar are available through custom publisher Lulu Press, spiral bound at the top and beautifully printed on heavy, coated stock. The larger — and more impressive — 13 x 19 version is priced at $28; a smaller 11 x 8 1/2 in. version is also available for $18. Visit glpease.com for details and direct links to Lulu Press and Imagekind.

Westminster Blend from Gregory Pease

Described by the blender as “Essentially English,” the new Westminster is a well-balanced, traditionally-styled mixture of Cyprus Latakia, fine oriental tobaccos, and rich, ripe Virginia leaf. It is available in 2-oz and 8-oz tins.

This latest creation from G. L. Pease was described as a journey to recapture the original spirit of a very storied tobacco blend that has changed manufacturers several times since its introduction in 1923, evolving in taste along the way. For the full story of how and why he created the Westminster blend, visit www.glpease.com.

P.T.M. Grecian Pipes Now from Indianhead

P.T.M. Grecian briar pipes has appointed Miami-based Indianhead as the company’s exclusive U.S. distributor.

Grecian briar is known for its porosity, making it comfortable in the mouth and easy on the teeth due to its light weight. This porosity also means the pipe smokes dry and cool. Named after the initials of the company’s three partners, P.T.M. pipes are offered in a broad line of standard pipe shapes, plus Danish freehand styles. Suggested retail pricing for the standard pipes start at $60, with the freehand designs running upwards of $600. The entire P.T.M. line is now available from Indianhead.
