TOBACCO PRODUCTS AND INDUSTRY PROMOTIONS

Copenhagen Rolling Out New Packaging

U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (USSTC) has rolled out new packaging for its Copenhagen line of moist smokeless tobacco products. The new packaging is designed to provide a more consistent look for the entire line. Debuting at retail in July, the new designs can be found on original Copenhagen Snuff, Copenhagen Long Cut, Copenhagen Pouches, and bourbon-flavored Copenhagen Black. In early 2007, it will be applied to the line's latest offering, Copenhagen Long Cut Straight, which was just launched this past February.

"The objective of this new packaging is to enhance the premium presentation of the Copenhagen brand," said brand manager Joan Pedley, who oversaw the changes.

The Copenhagen packaging changes will be promoted in an email to adult consumers, in point-of-sale materials, and in a consumer magazine advertising campaign.

Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Debuts

Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has released the Rocky Patel Vintage 1999, featuring a seven-year-old shade grown wrapper from Connecticut. Golden brown in appearance, Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 is a rich but mild cigar line with creamy, nutty flavors along with a hint of cedar. Patel worked with Daniel Nuñez, president and master blender of General Cigar Co., to create this cigar line comprising the Vintage blend and a special wrapper. "We set out to make an elegant, mild cigar that's smooth and clean, like an aged port," said Patel, president and c.e.o., of Rocky Patel Cigar Co. "This Vintage series makes our cigar portfolio complete - from the exquisite and mild Vintage 1999s to the rich and balanced, full-bodied Olde World Reserve."

Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 is rolled at General Cigar's Honduran American Tobacco S.A. (Hatsa) factory in Danlí, Honduras and has the same interior blend as the 1990 and 1992 series - aged Nicaraguan and Dominican ligero filler tobaccos and a Nicaraguan binder. But because the matured Connecticut shade wrapper is a more fragile leaf, the Vintage 1999s are not box pressed. The new line is available in the same primary sizes as the 1990s and 1992s: Churchill, Toro, Robusto, Torpedo, Petit Corona, The 60, and a brand new size called Perfecto.

New Gurkha G3 and Second Releases of Gurkha Beast, Titan

Gurkha G3 from Beach Cigar Group is "reasonably priced" for the super-premium status Gurkha cigars enjoy, says Kaizad Hansotia, president and c.e.o. of Beach Cigar Group. The powerful new cigar has a "Super fuerte, triple ligero wrapper so powerful we warn smokers on the box, 'Please be seated when smoking this cigar; not for the amateur,' explains Hansotia. Still, the cigar never crosses over into harshness or bitterness, Hansotia says, adding, "it's an incredibly smooth smoke."

Gurkha G3 is available in a single 6" x 52 frontmark and is priced at $178 for a box of 20. The box itself is a black genuine leather binocular-style case with edge stitching and a wrap-around strap with snap closure to secure the lid. Felt-lined tubes hold 10 cigars each.

Beach Cigar has also debuted the second release of two cigars originally introduced at RTDA 2005. Only 1,000 boxes each of the original Gurkha Beast and Gurkha Titan were produced and sold out within 10 months, prompting a second 1,000-box limited release. "We're calling them Beast II and Titan II," says Hansotia, "but the blends are unchanged."

Suggested retail for the 6 1/2 x 52 Beast II is $700 per box of 35; the 6 1/2 x 50 Titan II is $750 for 31 cigars. Packaging for the Titan consists of a high-tech aircraft aluminum box with swing-up doors holding two trays of eight cigars each; a corrugated box holds another 15 for subsequent refilling. The Beast comes in a conventional black lacquer box with metallic magnetic closure for the lid and a metallic plaque inside the lid.

A new catalog featuring the entire Gurkha line is available to retailers directly or by contacting the company's local representatives.
