Treasurer Grand Robusto by Chancellor Tobacco Ltd.

G.A. Andron, Deer Park, N.Y., has launched Chancellor Tobacco's Dominican-made Treasurer Grand Robusto Luxury cigar to complement their existing Treasurer luxury cigarette sales. The cigars, described as "extreme indulgence," retail at $28 per cigar or $600 for the personal five tube humidor.

Treasurer Grand Robustos measure 5 inches by 50 ring gauge, and are hand rolled by top torecadors in the Tamboril region of the Dominican Republic, utilizing aged Dominican long filler, a premium Cameroon wrapper leaf used as a binder, and a top-quality Cuban-seed Caribbean wrapper. All tobaccos are selected by master blender Andrew Noakes. According to Chancellor, Treasurer is the only cigar made with two premium wrappers.

After aging, the cigars are shipped to Holland, color sorted, and sealed in a mini crystal humidor - glass and aluminum tubes with cedar liner, cork, and sponge. The cigars are packaged in 5- or 10-tube personal humidors, which are hand crafted from presentation-grade walnut. The units include a matching torch lighter and punch cutter, and the writing on the 10-tube humidor is in sterling silver. Retailers may also purchase silver foil cardboard 10 tube boxes for single tube sales.

There is also a Maduro-wrapped robusto currently in production for later release. Chancellor also plans to release two additional sizes in two variations.

Old Port Cigar Company to Market Aromatic Products

The Old Port Cigar Company announced the Canadian market debut of two new products - Old Port Aromatic cigarillos and Colt Aromatic cigars. The two products have a sweet aroma.

Like the classic rum and wine-dipped Old Port and Colts - the type of cigars that Old Port was the first to market on a broad scale in Canada - the new products are composed of the highest quality tobacco blend from a number of countries, including the Dominican Republic and Indonesia. Old Port Aromatic is available in packs of five and 50, while Colt Aromatic can be obtained in packs of eight and 50.

André Blais, the director of marketing for the Old Port Cigar Company, said the creation of the two new products addresses a need expressed by consumers.

The introduction of the new brands also consolidates the company's position as the industry leader, with its current brands comprising 52% of the Canadian market. "After neglecting cigars for several years, Canadian consumers have re-discovered the exquisite pleasure and the unequaled sense of relaxation that comes from a fine cigar," said Maurice Bédard, the company's general manager. "Cigar sales in Canada have been on the upswing since 1995, with sales increasing by 13% between 1995 and 1999."

Along with the introduction of these two products, the Old Port Cigar Company is currently bringing out new packaging for all of its Old Port and Colts products. "That's only the beginning," said Bédard. "We are planning other initiatives over the next few months to better serve our Canadian consumers."

Astral Talanga Valley Selection Available in Limited Quantities

U.S. Cigar Sales, Inc. has begun distributing its latest release, Astral Talanga Valley Selection, to select tobacconists nationwide.

Astral Talanga Valley Selection features a natural maduro wrapper leaf from U.S. Cigar Sales' exclusive Talanga Cuban hybrid tobacco. This variety was developed and grown by Ramon Fuego, a Cuban expatriate hired to run the company farm in the Talanga Valley of Honduras. The wrapper itself comes from the corona, or uppermost priming, of the Talanga Cubano tobacco plant.

"Traditionally, the corona was the only source of maduro wrapper leaf," explains Larry Palombo, president of U.S. Cigar Sales. "At some point, manufacturers began exploring artificial processes for creating maduro wrapper. These processes, while effective at darkening the leaves, had the negative effect of reducing the character of the tobacco. Because Astral Talango Valley Selection is a natural maduro, it is full of character and unique flavors."

The dark, oily Talango Cubano corona wrapper leaves - which have been aged for a full 12 months - have a heavy texture and reddish hues. Combined with a San Andres binder from Mexico and fillers from the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Nicaragua, these cigars are for those seeking fuller body and heavier flavor.

"Since we are using only the uppermost priming for this cigar," notes Palombo, "the quantities of wrapper available are relatively few. We have enough to produce a very limited supply of cigars over the next 12 months."

Square-pressed and available in a Robusto (5 x 50), Toro (6 x 50), Pyramid (6 x 52), and Churchill (7 x 48) shape, the manufacturer's suggested retail prices range from $4.95 to $5.95. The line is packaged in boxes featuring glossy black labels, gold accents and logo, and a full color illustration of a vista from the company's farm in the Talanga Valley of Honduras.
