El Rico Habano Now Offered in Maduro

Cigarmaster Ernesto Perez-Carrillo has followed up his popular, full-bodied El Rico Habano collection with a maduro version, which made its retail debut in September 2003. True to its roots, El Rico Habano Maduro features the same Nicaraguan long filler and Nicaraguan binder as its natural wrapper counterpart, lending it a familiar spiciness, while the Connecticut broadleaf wrapper provides the more mellow finish associated with maduros.

In response to consumer preferences, Perez-Carrillo has created three new large-ring-gauge frontmarks for El Rico Habano Maduro, not available in the previously existing line: Gran Habano Deluxe (7 x 54); Rico Club (5 x 54); and Torpedo (6 x 54). Retail prices range from $131. 25 to $150 for a box of 25 cigars, or $5.25 to $6.00 per stick.

Arango to Distribute Major Mass Market Cigar Brands

The brands are produced by leading popular-priced manufacturers, including Altadis, U.S.A., Swedish Match North America, and Swisher International, Inc.

The target market consists of cigarette and tobacco outlets - a rapidly growing segment of the industry - as well as drug and convenience stores, liquor stores, and other retailers.

"Smaller chains and individual retailers have been buying premium tobacco products from us for some time," said Arango's president, Michael Gold. "These customers are attracted by our personal service, large selection, and fast response. We are now becoming more ambitious in the market, and therefore have acquired these top-selling brands." Nearly 95% of all cigars fall into the mass-market category, notes Gold.
