Drum RYO Adds New “World Blends” Series
Republic Tobacco is expanding its line of signature Drum “European Style” rolling tobacco with four new blends under the Drum World Blends moniker: Perique, Latakia, Piloto Cubano, and Turkish.
Perique, a tobacco native to New Orleans, has a rich and spicy taste, and is cured in hickory barrels and pressed with oak blocks.
Latakia leaf originally comes from the Mediterranean. Curing the leaf over stone, pine, and oak wood fires helps to give it a sweet, smoky flavor likened to a fine, vintage Port.
Piloto Cubano, coming from the seeds of Cuban tobaccos, has an impressive, uncommon richness and robust flavor.
Turkish is a unique tobacco from the Orient that has gained its mild, rich, and aromatic flavor form a century-old curing process.
“Discerning smokers have valued and sought after these special tobaccos for centuries,” explains Tamas Malacsina, marketing director. “We’ve invested a lot of time finding and blending them to deliver each unique smoking experience.”
The Drum World Blends are packed in six pouches per sleeve, and 24 sleeves per case; an acrylic counter display is also available to merchandise the line.

Tabacos de Cordillera Offers Variety Samplers
Tabacos de la Cordillera has released a set of economically-priced samplers for their line of Fundación Ancestral premium cigars. Each contains one of each of the five Fundación Ancestral blends, all of which come from Puriscal, Costa Rica, and are available in four sizes: Churchill, corona, robusto, and torpedo.
“We don’t claim to make Cuban cigars, or say they contain Cuban tobacco,” says John Vogel, director of Tabacos de la Cordillera. “What sets us apart from every other company is that we grow all Fundación Ancestral tobacco from our proprietary Cuban seed varieties that pre-date Castro by 20 years. These are the only surviving seeds from that era. They offer all the power, flavor, and aroma of the classic Havanas Antiguas.”
The five blends of the Fundación Ancestral use tobaccos called “Serie 1940” through “Serie 1944,” signifying the year each was developed by researchers in Cuba. According to the manufacturer, these seeds became the archetypes for Cuban cigars until the embargo.
“Now, smokers can satisfy their curiosity and save substantially over the price of buying our regular 5-pack samplers of each of the Fundación Ancestral cigar lines,” says Vogel. Serie 1940, 1941, and 1944 have neutral wrappers, while Serie 1942 and 1943 are maduros. The samplers carry a price tag between $56.25 (robusto) and $58.50 (Churchill) per box.

New Casa Gomez Cigars Honor Gomez Family History
Benny Gomez Jr., whose father once made cigars in Little Havana as La Roma Cigars, has partnered with La Tradicion Cubana to make his new line, Casa Gomez, a medium-bodied premium long-filler cigar with a taste profile that comes in on the sweet side, according to the manufacturer. Made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera LTC with Dominican filler, Honduran binder, and Ecuadorian wrapper, Casa Gomez is available in four sizes: Senior (7 1/2 x 50), Benjamin (6 1/2 x 54 torpedo), Lorens (6 1/2 x 44 corona), and Junior (5 3/4 x 52 robusto). They are packaged in boxes of 25, and retail at $5.50 - $6.50 per cigar. In the future, Gomez expects to extend this line using a different wrapper as well as new packaging.
Gomez’s grandfather, Ralph Gomez Arango, migrated from Spain to Cuba in the early 1900s, and established a deposito de tabacos that supplied tobacco products to hotels, restaurants, clubs, and cruise ships in Havana. Gomez’s father, Benjamin Gomez Perez, fled Cuba in 1961 and established La Roma Cigars in 1963. That factory was later sold to Ernesto Perez Carillo Sr., and became El Credito Cigars.

Pinar del Río Debuts New Cigar Lines
Juan Rodriguez of the 80-year-old Tabacos Don Leoncio, S.A. cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, and Abraham Flores - whose family has farmed tobacco for two generations - have joined together to blend and produce a new line of premium cigars. The partners have named their venture after the tobacco-growing province Pinar del Río of Cuba, and have recently released two lines: Pinar Del Río Habano Sun-Grown and Pinar Del Río Oscuro.
The Pinar Del Río Habano Sun-Grown is a medium- to full-bodied cigar that uses Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos, as well as a Habano wrapper, a “reminder of the great wrappers grown in Pinar Del Río, Cuba - wrappers that are deep red-brown in tone with a silky texture,” said Flores.
Pinar Del Río Oscuro is a strong cigar “layered notes of rich toasty molasses and brown sugar on the palate,” being made specifically for the “dark wrapper enthusiast,” a strong but “supremely clean” cigar with a maduro wrapper leaf and Dominican and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos that are “not for the faint of heart.”
Both blends are available in robusto (5 x 50), toro (6 x 50), torpedo (6 1/2 x 52), and Churchill (7 x 50) formats, presented in hinge-lid, cabinet-style cedar boxes of 20.

Camel Crush from Reynolds Tobacco Goes National
Following an initial lead-market launch in Pennsylvania in April, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. has taken its innovative Camel Crush menthol cigarette brand national.
Camel Crush is a standard Camel Light cigarette that contains a tiny flavor capsule inside the filter. When smokers squeeze and crush the capsule, menthol flavor is released. The innovative design allows a smoker to enjoy a menthol cigarette “when and if they choose,” says David Howard, director of communications at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Smokers can crush it a little and get a slight flavor; they can crush it completely and get “a fresh menthol blast,” or they can choose to not crush it at all.
The new brand is packaged in sleek black and blue boxes with rounded corners, and are available in 85mm Kings. Menthol brands account for 28 percent of the U.S. cigarette market.
