Villazon Unveils Hoyo de Monterrey Seleccion Royale
New Sizes Added to Excalibur Line

General Cigar subsidiary Villazon & Co. introduced a new superpremium cigar in October - the Hoyo de Monterrey Seleccion Royale. The latest entry to the company's noted Honduran line, the Hoyo de Monterrey Seleccion Royale is a line of four figurados that feature band and box designs that evoke the traditional Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey style.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Seleccion Royale is manufactured in Cofradia, Honduras, and consists of filler from a blend of Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Dominican piloto Cubano tobaccos, a Honduran binder, and an Ecuadorian wrapper. The four available sizes are: Aristocrat (a 6 1/8 x 54 perfecto), Duques (a 6 1/8 x 54 pyramid), Marques (a 6 1/4 x 50 pyramid-tipped cigar), and Condesa (a 6 1/2 x 50 belicoso). Only a select few rollers at the company's factory are assigned to produce the hard-to-make shapes.

Upon their release, the Seleccion Royale cigars were initially available only through Alfred Dunhill tobacconists. In December, the limited edition cigars became available at additional smoke shops nationwide. The Hoyo de Monterrey Seleccion Royale come packaged in old-style boxes of 20.

New Full-Bodied Avo Domaine 10

Davidoff of Geneva recently debuted the latest creation of renowned cigar maker Avo Uvezian - the Avo Domaine 10. The new superpremium Domaine was introduced to mark the ten-year anniversary of the introduction of Avo cigars. It is a fuller-bodied version of the original Avo line.

The Avo Domaine 10 is handmade at Tabacos Dominicanos S.A. in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and consists of filler from a blend of three Dominican tobaccos, a binder of San Vicente seed tobacco leaf from the Dominican, and a double-fermented Connecticut shade wrapper. It is available in a single size, a 5 1/8 x 50 robusto, and comes packaged in cedar boxes of 25. The Domaine [10] sports an eye-catching purple and silver version of the traditional Avo band. The robusto size is the first in what will be a line of seven Domaine cigars.

In October, Davidoff held an event at their lavish retail shop on New York City's Madison Avenue to preview the Avo Domaine. Samples of the new cigar were available to guests along with an assortment hors d'oeuvres and fine wines. In attendance was Al Remp of Davidoff, who gave a brief speech on the background and creation of the new Avo.

Limited Edition Match Play Cigar Commemorates '98 Presidents Cup
In November, Dormie International, Ltd., manufacturer of the Match Play cigar line, in conjunction with Davidoff of Geneva, released a commemorative cigar honoring the Presidents Cup, one of the PGA's most prestigious tour events. The Presidents Cup cigar is specially blended from aged tobaccos and was produced in a single run; only about 2,600 boxes were manufactured. This limited edition cigar is double-banded, displaying both the Match Play and Presidents Cup trademarks.

The Presidents Cup cigar is handmade at Tabacos Dominicanos S.A. in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and consists of Dominican filler and binder, and a Connecticut shade wrapper. The cigar was manufactured using rare tobaccos that have been aged in storage by Hendrik Kelner, owner of Tabacos Dominicanos, for several years. As there wasn't enough tobacco for a full production run, Kelner and Davidoff had always planned to create a limited edition cigar.

The Presidents Cup is available in a single size, 7 x 48, and comes packaged in handsome collector's boxes of 25, each with a numbered letter of authenticity. They are being distributed through fine cigar shops nationwide, as well as the TPC courses and some of the PGA Tour shops, located in many of the larger airports.

The Presidents Cup, founded in 1994 and played every two years, was established as a global match play golf competition. The event attracts an international team of the best tour players from around the world. This year, the event takes place at the Royal Melbourne in Australia in December. All proceeds from this event have been designated to fund the many charities chosen by the players themselves and supported by the PGA Tour worldwide. Dormie International, Ltd., along with Davidoff of Geneva, will donate $25 for every box sold worldwide to the designated charities. An estimated $50,000 will be raised through sales of the limited edition Match Play/Presidents Cup cigar.

"Only through the great game of golf and the efforts of the PGA Tour, are so many lives enriched through these charity oriented competitions," said Thomas Whittaker, president of Dormie International, Ltd. "Those of us involved in this project, from Dormie International, Ltd., Davidoff of Geneva, Inc., and the artisans of Tabacos Dominicanos S.A., are proud to be part of this prestigious event."

Napa Cigar Co., Consolidated Cigar Co. Enter Co-Branding Agreement

Napa Cigar Co., founded by Robert Mondavi, Jr., son of noted winemaker Michael Mondavi, has formed an alliance with Consolidated Cigar Corp. to introduce two new Dominican-made cigar lines under a co-branding agreement. The intent of the agreement is to combine the esteemed Napa and Mondavi names with the name recognition associated with Consolidated's existing brands.

The two new lines, Dominican Estate by Don Diego, and Dominican Reserve by H. Upmann, are manufactured at Tabacalera de Garcia, Consolidated's factory in La Romana. Dominican Estate by Don Diego cigars are made with Dominican filler and binder and finished with a dark Java wrapper. Five sizes are available: Rothchild (4 1/2 x 50), Lonsdale (6 x 44), Toro (6 x 50), Pyramid (6 x 50), and Churchill (7 x 48). Dominican Reserve by H. Upmann consists of Dominican filler blended with a small amount of Brazilian Mata Fina tobacco, a Dominican binder, and a Connecticut shade wrapper. The cigar is available in five sizes: Petite Corona (5 1/2 x 42), Robusto (5 x 50), Toro (6 x 50), Pyramid (6 x 52), and Gran Corona (7 1/2 x 50). The cigars are double-banded with the Mondavi/ Napa and the Don Diego and H. Upmann names represented.

Upon launching Napa Cigar Co. in December 1995, Robert Mondavi, Jr. traveled extensively throughout the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama, learning about tobacco growing and cigar production. He eventually chose the Nica-Habanos factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, to produce the company's first cigar line, which was released in November 1996. In addition to the new lines manufactured by Consolidated, Napa Cigar Co. produces four cigar lines under their own name: Napa Canary Islands Reserve, Napa Dominican Republic Reserve, Napa Nicaraguan Selection, and Napa Dominican Selection.

Natural American Spirit Debuts Herbal Cigarettes
100 Percent U.S.-Grown RYO Tobacco Also Introduced

In September, Natural American Spirit extended its line of 100 percent additive-free cigarettes with the addition of Herbal cigarettes. The new Herbals are the company's first tobacco-free cigarettes and are made from specially selected all-natural ingredients. The cigarette is a unique blend of plant herbs, including cornsilk, yerba santa, licorice, mullein, coltsfoot, and horehound, that have been wild-gathered and have been used in traditional Native American society for centuries.

Packaged in an eye-catching orange soft pack, the Herbal Cigarettes have been carefully blended to provide a soothing and satisfying smoke for those looking for a tobacco-free alternative. "We wanted to give our customers an alternative to the traditional tobacco cigarette and continue to build the Natural American Spirit brands," said Robin Sommers, president and c.e.o. of Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co. "The Herbals are a welcomed addition to Natural American Spirit's tremendously successful product line of 100 percent additive-free, natural tobacco products."

In addition, the company has introduced the first additive-free, whole leaf, natural RYO tobacco grown entirely in the U.S. The 100% U.S. Grown Blend consists of a medium shag cut, which is finer than Natural American Spirit's pouch tobaccos, and is available in 150-gram canisters. To accompany the 100% U.S. Grown Blend, the company is also offering the Natural American Spirit Original Blend, also in a medium shag cut, in 150-gram canisters. Both blends come with 200 Rizla cigarette papers.
